I always wondered by Asian people seemed to control their weight so effortlessly. While genetics certainly plays a role, perhaps there’s a connection between weight management and green tea consumption.
If you’ve researched the book Fiber Fueled, you learned the vital component of gut microbiome health to our general health and weight. The correlation is undeniable.
Well, further accreditation of this connection comes in the form of an Ohio State University study with the results published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. The scientists used mice that were fed a diet of 2 percent green tea extract and a control group with no green tea. Results? The mice given the green tea gained less weight than those that ate a diet without it.
The takeaway? Improved gut health which included more beneficial microbes in the intestines of the mice and less penetrable intestinal walls, a condition known as “leaky gut” in people. According to lead researcher Richard Bruno: “This study provides evidence that green tea encourages the growth of good gut bacteria, and that leads to a series of benefits that significantly lower the risk of obesity.”
