Well, yes and no. Obviously if you add sugar or cream (any diary or non dairy) your fast is compromised. So you may want to ask yourself, what is my fasting goal? Just to forgo calories or to speed clean my gut?
Fasting – like time restricted eating – benefits your gut microbes because they get a break, allowing them to reset. Water does not interrupt that – but anything else does.
It’s known, though, that a good quality organic coffee free from molds can offer fat burning metabolic benefits when consumed black with no other solid food. Some walk the line between these two methods by fasting twelve hours on water only followed by black coffee for a few more hours in the morning.
